I just had my worst knitting disaster. I had reached 50% on my owl, had completed the knitting on a top down cardigan for my daughter, an adult small, when I discovered several holes, and discerned that the young boy had decided to "practice" with scissors! Oh my, was I frustrated!!! I opted to start over and make some changes to the sweater and in the end I think we're happier with it - everything works out, even knitting disasters!!

My OWL from this term. I had to rip back and rechart when I was 1/4 done. I then made the cuff too long and performed surgery. I made the floats too tight, and the decreases really sloppy. The thumb ended up being too tight and had gaps. I finally just gave up since it wasn't worth the pain to finish. I also couldn't bear to rechart the thumb

I guess my knitting disaster would be teaching my family (kids and husband) how to knit and/or crochet now they want to use my wool (as if!) and my DH needs a counter so I'm entering to win for him. b/c I'm not sharing (well mine are currently in use)
another one is i tried making felted crochet slippers and they felted too long. b/c crochet felts differently than knitting i didn't expect it. silly me.

Worst knitting disaster --- I've conveniently "forgotten" all of mine! Still reeling about winning the book!

Hrm... probably my biggest crochet disaster was one that I finished... a giant crochet blanket (63 squares) all different patterns. There weren't any mistakes, except the fact that it was crocheted in eye-searing blue, green, and pink.

I wonder what happened to it...

My worst knitting disaster was actually a yarn-winding disaster. I'd purchased some beautiful homespun alpaca from a local farm, and dyed it half a mossy green and half a dusty rose. It should self-stripe, and I loved it. Then I tried to put it on my swift to wind it. It was in too big of a loop for my swift to handle. So I tried to reskein it. To make a long story short, I had a tangled mess of about 450 yards of alpaca fingering weight that I ended up untangling and winding by hand. It took me about two months, working on and off, to untangle it all.

well i guess i'd have to say the blanket i've been trying to make for 3 years. First version my oldest dog threw up on. Nothing like a little dog puke to make you never want to touch something again. Second version the pattern was written badly and the wrong side and right side were messed up. Now i'm on the third version and i haven't touched it in months.

More of a disaster discovered while wearing knitwear, I was wearing my Swan Lake stole at my cousin's wedding when I spotted a HOLE. Apparently, something snagged it at some point. I still haven't worked up the courage to try to do surgery on it. :(

My biggest knitting disaster: I was knitting one of my first lace scarves and was about half done. I put it in my knitting bag on the floor and went to work. When I opened the door after a long day in the lab, I was greeted by yarn all through the living room. My scarf was on the floor, the yarn ball was wound around the coffee table several times and ended up in the upstairs bathroom. The cats told me it was the house elf's fault.

ok thus far my worst knitting disaster has to be my MUGGLE STUDIES OWL, that i am making this term. i am making the February Lady and i mis-read the pattern. in the eyelet set up row it says to knit 41 yo evenly spaced between said # of sts. however, i read it to say "k 41, then yo evenly spaced between said # of sts". i didnt realize my error until i was setting up the lace pattern and i was 10sts short. what did i do, you ask. i cried, i pouted, then i fixed it by picking up the sts as if i had dropped them :)!! thus i am 2in into the lace and moving right along, hoping to finish in time to turn in for a grade :)

Does crocheting count too?

My worst crocheting disaster-- waking up in the middle of the night to discover my oh-so-wonderful-cat gleefully kneading my scarf-in-progress, chasing the yarn, and generally making a mess of things. And to top it all off, when I was trying to put things to right the next morning, I discovered that he also thought that the yarn was tasty and had tried to eat it in several places. YUCK! Yarn covered in dried kitty-spit is not very nice. :(

The very worst, psyche-scarring knitting disaster? My very first 'scarf'. It looks like a bisected candy-striped sock. I was around 8 years old, and did not knit again for a decade or so...

Mum has preserved it in her UFO pile ever since. :)

My worst knitting disaster? Probably last term.... I converted a crocheted spiral bag that called for cotton into a knit bag made with wool that I wanted to felt. Changing single crochet rows to garter stitch rows was straight-forward; increasing the size by about 25% for shrinkage, I underestimated a "bit"; but it wasn't too bad. The problem came when I was supposed to pick up & knit for the "throat" of the bag; loved how it "pinched in" the sides -- only I didn't account for the felting (totally spaced it)...

Yeah, um - it got turned into a toy "bag" for my son... and after two days, I got the "it's really too small, mom"... yep. It is.

The "throat of the bag was big enough to fit a small child's hand through - as long as it wasn't holding anything.

Most of my other disasters were either "I can live with this" or "I can frog this and make something else"... however, a felted bag? That's too small.. epic fail. I couldn't figure out any way to save it.
