An Interview with... Sir Hat!

Students of Hogwarts!

The blog team are proud to bring you this exclusive interview!

As you all know Sir Hat (aka The Sorting Hat) is extremely busy at this time of year, but he took a few moments out of his packed schedule to speak to the blogging team!

Sir Hat! Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to speak to us!

 Of course, my dear!

April, August and December are some of your busiest times of year. How does the sorting work exactly? The intergration of muggle technology into the process must have made things a little easier for you and your helpers?

Much of the process is of course confidential, but Muggle technology has indeed made it much easier. We can now integrate the Hogwarts student records with specialized spreadsheet spells to check each applicant’s participation and make sure each House has the correct number and type of students.

When I receive an application from a new student, I first send it to my group of assistants for evaluation. I then look over the student’s application and any work they have done as a NQFY and make a final decision as to whether and where to sort them. Returning students are much simpler -- a student in good standing wishing to return to their current House will stay there. Transfers are evaluated much like new students, taking into account whether there is room in their desired House this year.

What about your hat helpers? Who are they exactly? Do you have a brigade of baby hats who help you out? It’s all rather "Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompa’s" isn’t it, quite mysterious?

My helpers are a wonderful group of House Cup staff who help me evaluate the NQFYs every year. Some years they have also assisted in analyzing data and other tasks. I truly could not do this job without them.

Your sorting songs have become Legend at Hogwarts! How do you come up with them, and how long does it take? Do you have any favourites?

Well, my dear, after a thousand years one does tend to start running out of ideas, so in recent years I have started to award the song writing task to particularly poetical House Cup staff. For example, this year’s song was written by SarahTheEntwife, and last year’s by Hermioneweasley.

What do you think The Founders of Hogwarts (Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin) would say if they knew you were still being used to sort students 1000 years on?

I would certainly hope they would be pleased!

There have also been some speculative rumours going round the castle about you and a certain easter bonnet? Would you care to comment?

We spent a delightful April weekend together, but other than that I have no comment at this time.

Finally, you spend a lot of your spare time in the staff room, you must overhear a few things? Can you tell us anything that we might look forward to next term?

Well, I can’t reveal too much or the Headmistress will look at me very sternly, but I think it is safe to say that we can look forward to some celebrity appearances in the classrooms and this year’s Quidditch will be even more spectacular than last year’s!

Thank you very much Sir Hat! Happy Sorting!

Sorting is happening right now!

All relevant information, including the sorting form can be found on THIS THREAD.

'The Sorting will be open until high noon POT on Monday, April the 23rd. Absolutely no late entries will be accepted. The Hat will do his best to place everyone in a House, but if there are more spaces than applicants, priority will be accorded on the basis of seniority and participation level.'

Already filled out the form and looking for something to do in the meantime?

SS Yarny Goodness (The April Break Month activity) is currently docked in Great Britain!

Why not jump aboard and join in with all the fun?!

Happy Crafting!
