Granny Squares!

Hey Everyone!

This weeks edition of Tutorial Tuesday is looking at the humble, but wonderful Granny Square!
Granny Squares are a fantastic stash buster and can be used in a variety of creative ways. Not only do they look pretty, but they are also pretty hard-wearing. They are also very adaptable, and there are hundreds if not thousands of patterns out in the vast ocean that is the internet showcasing many variations of these cute little blighter's!

But, for this weeks tutorial, I am going to show you how to create the easiest of all of these, your basic granny square.

For this example I have used the same yarn throughout, however, it is very easy to change your colour each round, simply by cutting your working yarn and joining with a new colour! This pattern uses UK terminology.

You will need:
4mm crochet hook.
A small amount of dk weight yarn.

Lets Begin! :D
Make 3 chain, join with ss (slip stitch) to form a ring.

Round 1) 3 chain (to count as 1st treble or stitch), 2 treble, 2 chain. (Then 3 treble, 2 chain) three times in ring. Join with slip stitch in 3rd chain. (This will give you the four corners of the square).

Round 2) 3 chain, (2 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) in corner space, 2 chain, * (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) in next space,2 chain; repeat from * to end of round, join with a slip stitch in 3rd chain.

Round 3) 3 chain, (2 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) in corner space * 2 chain, 3 treble in next space, 2 chain, (3 treble,2 chain, 3 treble) in corner space; repeat from * to last space, 2 chain, 3 treble in last space, join with slip stitch in 3rd chain.

Round 4) 3 chain, (2 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble)in corner space *2 chain, 3 treble in next space, 2 chain, 3 treble in next space, 2 chain, (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) in corner space; repeat from * to last space, 2 chain, 3 treble in last space, join with slip stitch in the 3rd chain. Fasten off. Weave in you ends. Hey Presto! You have a granny square!

Now you know the basic granny square pattern the world is your oyster! You could create jackets and bags, cushions and dresses! Or you can just keep making them until you have enough to create an entire blanket!...

See you next time!
