Tutorial Tuesday: Joining Yarn

Happy Valentine's Day!

In honor of today's holiday, I thought we'd talk about joining yarn!

When you're working on a large project, it's always an issue when you come to the end of one skein and need to start another. This also happens when you need to change colors.

First, if you have a feltable yarn, the easiest way is to felt the two ends together. Just get the ends wet, place the ends in your hand and rub together. Easy peasy! This is best for when you are joining yarn of the same color. If you want to decrease bulk, split the plies of both ends and break off about half of the plies on each end.

You can also do a knit-in join where you knit a few stitches with both yarns, overlapping the new end with the old end. This is also called the overlap method.

A third, and perhaps sneakiest way is to do a Russian Join. This method is a bit more complex, so I'm including a video tutorial created by the wonderful Susan B. Anderson.

These are just a few options, but there are many more out there! What's your favorite way to join a new skein of yarn?

There isn't too much to report this week. All of our advanced studies students are busy crafting away on NEWTs, OWLs, and Phoenixes!

I can, however, let you in on how our other NEWTlings are doing! We have had a few more reach 50%!

It's TUTORIAL TUESDAY!

Last visit I was talking toes.
Today it's heels.
Heels are an illusive thing that we all try to conquer. Trying to find that better heel that will be easier and nicer looking.

Personally, I am always looking for heel ideas!

So I am going to show you a few.
Firstly there is the short row, which is similar to the toe, so I won't repeat it here.

Then there is the slipped-stitch heel. More stretchy and textured, some people don't enjoy it. But it looks kind of nifty!

The video in all honesty, seems a bit complex even for me. But there are advantages to it non-the less.

The final heel has been going around the internet. Another of the lovely Cat Bordhi called the sweet tomato heel:

I would suggest a great research is the Wendy D. Johnson or Wendy Knits books, they have helped me tremendously.

So again cuff down people I have missed you. I have researched and not found it easy to decide. I will do a dedicated tutorial for you. I promise.

Welcome to the February 2012 edition of Felix Felicis Friday!

First, we must award January's prize!

Our question was: The Malfoy family is one of the most well-known and affluent wizarding families. Narcissa Malfoy, the family matriarch, is a dedicated follower of fashion. If you had to craft one item of ‘high wizarding fashion’ clothing, so as to blend in at the Malfoy’s annual New Years Ball, what would you create and why?

Tutorial Tuesday: English vs. Continental

Do you throw or pick? I do both, and find it helpful to know how to do both in doing colorwork.

If you only know how to do one or the other but want to learn a second way, read on!

Are you a crocheter who's wanted to learn to knit, Continental might be just the ticket for you! Continental has you holding your yarn in your left hand just like you do when you crochet.

When I learned to knit, I learned English style, or "throwing." In this style, you wrap the yarn around the knitting needle with your right hand. Here's a tutorial on English knitting.

Last Christmas, I decided to make scarves for everyone in my family. This took a lot of time. To make things go faster, I decided to learn how to knit Continental, or to "pick" the yarn through the stitches. The following video was the most helpful for me in learning to knit Continental.

Time for Hogwarts After Hours!

Today's episode we enter the Tower and find out what Ravenclaw is up to.

SFcorgi, obviously a true Ravenclaw, gave me a bullet point list. So I will use her fine list to let you know what's going on!

We have an accountability partners thread where you can get someone to support you in any endeavor (crafting or otherwise).
A Words With Friends tournament is underway.
We have a candle lighting thread where we send good thoughts out to each other… and anyone else who asks.
It’s all books, all the time in the Ravenclaw Readers thread.
We have a variety of Specialist Studies and knitalongs led by Tower members.
Each term, we award the Mrs. Lovegood Memorial Mad Scientist award to the craziest of the crazy.
We highly prize storytelling and award a badge to those who can link 6 classes together with one long story.

Tutorial Tuesday: Sock Toe cast ons

Welcome to tutorial Tuesdays!
This week we will venture into the world of SOCKS!

I admit I am a toe-up girl. So today I am planning to cover some toe cast-ons. Sorry Cuff down peeps. I will cover heels at some point in the term, and I will cover heels for you there!

First I want to show you the short row toe.
Instead of writing an explanation, I thought I would give you a video to show you:

Which is the best? It's hard to decide. I still haven't mastered some. Mostly because I haven't done any magic loop. That is on my list for things to learn this year. Some of these are best when using circulars and I tend to still use my DPNs.

It's Quidditch time!

This week I am going to discuss all the options for the long version of Quidditch!

First is:

Cartomancy

Using the subtle art of Tarot, study the cards and see what your crafting future has planned for you. You see any combination of the following options in your cards:

Holiday Season 2012 Gifts (because you know some of you want to start this early!)
Birthday or other Occasion presents. (‘other occasion’ gifts need to be explained when submitted)
Projects that are not intended as gifts but are planned for a specific event (i.e. your wedding shawl, etc)
Projects that are intended to stock a shop or inventory for a booth at a craft fair/fiber festival. Please note that we will require somewhat of an explanation as to how the items fall under this option, but that this is in no way an invitation for advertising, and that any advertisements are limited to Diagon Alley (per the Diagon Alley rules). No exceptions.
Spinning and dyeing accepted here provided you already have a plan for the finished yarn. Want to spin the yarn that you need for your OWL next term? Excellent! Dyeing yarn to give to a friend for their Birthday, or to sell in an online shop? Also acceptable! Stash enhancement without plans is not an acceptable plan. Remember you can see the yarn’s future in the cards. :)

Next we move on to:
Oneiromancy
Those who choose to study their dreams for hints of their 2012 crafting futures may have to dig deep: our dreams aren’t always clear. Consult your textbooks and if necessary, use a dream journal to record your dreams- once you have written them out they may become clearer. Students who choose Oneiromancy need to be prepared to explain how their projects came from their dreams. Students who choose this method may discover any combination in the following in their dreams:
- You have a challenging dream project that you’ve been dreaming about making or trying (example: you want to learn a new craft or technique on a small, single project scale (that wouldn’t otherwise qualify for an OWL) or you have a design in your head that you’d like to get out!)
- You have a project in your Queue or Favorites that you’ve been wanting to start for more than 3 months, but have been putting on the back burner to get other projects done. Example: I have Rosa’s Sleeveless Cardi on my Queue (currently at number 4!), and it’s been there since December 2010! That would totally count! Something I only queued in December of 2011 would not count. Items must be Queued or Favorited on or before October 1st, 2011 in order to count here. We will check! If it isn’t in your Queue or Favorites, you can’t submit it for this option. You may make multiple items of the same Queued item. This is how you submit them.
- You keep returning to a re-occurring theme in your dreams, and it is visions of an empty project basket:
BUST OUT THOSE OLDER WIPS! WIPS will be allowed here if they are older than last term! (i.e. if it was started during last term, it’s not old enough! My Fall OWL shawl is not old enough! My Winter 2011 sweater is!) Please read the WIP rules below. WIPs that do not follow these rules may be refused.
Rules for WIPs:
1. Each WIP will earn 10 pts for completion provided it follows the criteria.
  
  A fine example would be that of jessdhill

  Palmistry
  You find that as you study the lines on your palms, that your future shows you selflessly devoted to the needs of strangers. Determined to see that path through, you turn to crafting for charity!

Tutorial Tuesday: Crochet, Chain Stitch.

Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday!

This week we’re going to be exploring first steps in crochet.

Crochet is an extremely rewarding craft, which, like knitting, can produce some extraordinarily beautiful projects.

The first thing to know about crochet is that there are just as many different stitches that can be created as with knitting, simply by combining the basic stitches (and variations thereupon).

The first of these is the chain stitch.

This is used in almost every crochet project, from simple place-mats to extravagant shawls, the chain is where we always start!

Chain Stitch

That’s it!

Easy right? Repeat this simple action until you have as many chain stitch as the pattern requires. This might be 10 or 100, but the action never changes!

From this you can create many wonderful things using a set of simple stitches.

Tutorial Tuesday: Swatching

It's OWL proposal season and you know what that means? Swatching. Lots of swatching.

Some of you may be asking, what's a swatch? How do I do that? Why do I need to swatch?

First, what is a swatch?
A swatch is a sample of the final product. This is either a small piece of knit/crochet fabric or a short length of spun fiber.

Why swatch?
As stated on the OWL page:

Gauge doesn’t always matter in projects such as afghans, shawls or many charity projects (for example where someone will be able to use the hat you made regardless of the finished size) however swatching can tell you whether you will produce a fabric that is pleasing to you.
But matching gauge is often invaluable when making fitted garments. We want you to know that your yarn and needle(s) play nicely together AND that your final object will fit the intended recipient.

How do I swatch for knitting?
Cast on the number of stitches in the chart below (from Knitty), knit 4 rows garter stitch and then the corresponding number of rows (subtracting 8 for the 2 ends of garter), knitting on the right side and k4, p to 4 from end, k4 on the wrong side. If you're using super bulky weight, only do 2 stitches of garter stitch on each side.

If you are knitting in the round for your project, be sure to swatch in the round. Your stitches will be different! You can either adapt the above chart to the round, knitting garter on the top and bottom edges only, or you could create a large gap in the back, as seen in this article.

Be sure to wash and block your swatch before you measure your stitches & rows per inch (or whichever measurement you prefer!)

How do I swatch for crocheting?

Look at the pattern for a gauge. Whatever the gauge is, add a few stitches to the sides and a few rows to the row count; the edge stitches have a different consistency than those of the main fabric. Once done crocheting, wash and block before measuring.

How do I swatch for spinning?

I'm not a spinner, so I'm going to let Knitty do the talking for me!

Decide whether your yarn will be singles, 2-ply or 3-ply. This will depend on the yarn you are trying to match, and the effect you wish to achieve.
Refer to the gauge table to see how thick your singles should be spun.
Spin a test length and measure the wraps per inch (wpi) both in the single and after plying. Even if the wpi is correct, knit a swatch as well for extra reassurance.
Keep your sample of singles handy while you spin so you can regularly check for consistency.

Advanced Studies Update: NEWTs

The NEWT proposal deadline has come and gone and we have our Winter 2012 NEWT cohort!

A little information about NEWTs from Chief Examiner BadAmy:

The Ministry of Magic is pleased to announce that students who have successfully completed four (4) Ordinary Wizarding Level Examinations (OWLs) are eligible to sit a Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (NEWT). One NEWT will earn your House 350 points. NEWTS are involved projects, using any of the Ravelry sanctioned crafts, which require consistent effort for three to four months.
To earn a NEWT, the student must demonstrate full mastery of a pair of subjects by creating an item or items that not only exceeds the OWL-level minimums for each chosen subject but somehow connects them. In simpler language:
1 NEWT = 2 related complex OWLs worth of work.

Hogwarts Express: Welcome to Winter Term 2012!

All Aboard! It's January 1, 2012 and it's time for us to say hello to a new term!

First, let me welcome the returning students. We eagerly look forward to the amazing crafting you will complete this term.

Second, let me welcome the firsties. You made it! Don't be worried about getting through your first term; there are a lot of people rooting you on, including the mentoring team. The Firsties Forum is a great place to get your questions answered.

Third, let me welcome those of you who missed sorting/were not sorted (Not-Quite-First-Years - NQFYs) or intentionally did not sort this term (Students on Sabbatical - SoSs). There is still so much you can do! Here's a little encouragement from our Head Mentor, BoppingBeth, who you can find in the waiting room just for NQFYs:

Being an NQFY is a great experience, because it gives you a chance to try lots of stuff out and not have the stress of points. Almost everything is possible. Jump in, make friends, hang around, ask questions in the lounge and learn the game. Don’t let not being sorted take you away from the fun. Let it be your chance to learn new skills, and be better prepared for becoming a sorted student.

For everyone, be sure to check the blog often, as there are things going on in the House Cup we don't want you to miss!

If you're an ickle firstie, a not-quite-first-year, or a returning student who just needs a little reminder, here are some important things to remember about the House Cup.

We are a PG group. This means we have a set of rules regarding conduct.
One (1) class per month is a requirement to maintain sorting priority for next term. If you are a NQFY, one (1) class per month since joining the cup will help you to gain a higher sorting priority for next term. Detention does not count as this one class. For more information, see our crafting and project standards pages
For a project to be turned in for a class, photos are required. We have a short tutorial on how to post photos for your convenience.
To be eligible for yardage bonus points, you must estimate the yardage used. We have a page dedicated to helping you estimate your yardage.
OWL (Ordinary Wizarding Level) proposals are due by the end of the month. Anyone can attempt an OWL, but only one OWL may be attempted per term. All twelve (12) OWLs must all be completed before a completed OWL subject may be repeated. An OWL constitutes approximately 8-12 weeks worth of work. Both NQFYs and SOSs may attempt an OWL or NEWT, receiving the badge and the completion needed for moving on to NEWTS, etc, but will not receive points. For more information on OWLs, check out the OWL page on Ravelry.
NEWT (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test) proposals are no longer being accepted for the current term. If you are a Ravenclaw, or just one at heart when it comes to planning, You may propose either an OWL or a NEWT in a term, not both. A NEWT is a combination of two (2) complex OWLs. NEWTs may be attempted after completing four (4) OWLs. Only one of your NEWT subjects must be one in which you have completed an OWL. For more information on NEWTs, check out the NEWT page on Ravelry.
Order of the Phoenix missions will be slightly different this term. Be sure to check the blog for updates and make certain you read the OotP thread on Ravelry. Students may choose to attempt a phoenix while also attempting an OWL or NEWT.

The Great Hall is abuzz! DrusillaWormwood has returned to the castle - giving orders from a stretcher! AlexisT is managing in an arm splint; Mushroom is limping heavily; Seakame is guiding their several carpetbags with her wand, showing only a slight twitch, but she is meeting no one’s eyes. School Nurse Boppingbeth was seen leading them to the infirmary with cups of chamomile tea.

Ravenclaws speak in low tones, “How did Vox8 get past Eagle Eye? That was some amazing spellwork!” Slytherins are all wearing their scarves indoors and clutching hot chocolate, as though a cold wind - like the one that perpetually surrounds TheWindWraith - had blown through their dungeon. Gryffindors are chatting about GazeboGal and her surprising entrance in their tower on her Electron 3K broom.

The Hufflepuffs are all bending over various pieces of paper with hastily-scratched notes. One of them makes a face at a second-year. “I don’t think that IsisOnEarth’s central message was ‘learn to make mojitos’, Evan!” The youngster looks discouraged, but they turn to JMN, who took copious and tidy notes.

“It’s all in learning the right way to make a Quick Quotes Quill, badgers,” she says. Then Geminio! she makes a few dozen copies of her notes. “Share them all around - all houses,” she says as she passes them about.

You get your hands on a copy of JMN’s neat script and read hastily while your dormmates crowd around you.

The past 3 weeks have surely been the perfect time to be an animal person in the Castle!

Over the course of twenty days we had an awesome posting of Cat & Dog offerings.

Hats and socks were finished.

Scarves and sweaters worn for the first time.

Mittens and blankets and toys have all been shared.

Not to mention over two dozen Dogs and over five dozen Cats were shown off by their owners!!!

We even had the cat of the castle – MrsNorristheCat stop by. In addition, our canine and feline friends were also joined by the Yule Rat, a December Bunny or two and even a Festive Guinea Pig. The castle has surely been alive!!!

The last week in Yule Cat history stuck out in my mind as the week of the adult sweaters.

It’s four days into the December break month and the Cup is being over-taken by

You’d have to either be a so allergic to cats and dogs that you can’t even look at pictures or blind if you haven’t seen the gallery of fur we’ve got going. All sizes, breeds, colors and sexes. I dare you not look and die of the cuteness!

Over in the Yule Cat thread we've had some early protections from becoming part of the the Yule Cat's feast.

FriedaLove, tesseractivate and ElizabethsMommy were our early birds, finishing garments to keep the Yule Cat at bay.

In the December Dog thread - We’ve got crafting plans of all types appearing –

Hey everyone!

I’m writing this blog a little late...so late in fact that it is now 2am on the morning of the 30th of November! (It’s times like this I love the time differences across the world!) Meaning that today it is now officially the last day of term!

It has been an absolutely thrilling ride, and as many of you know, I have had such a wonderful term abroad in Gryffindor!

That being said, it’s not all over yet! Don’t forget that you still have until Midnight POT to get your NEWTS, OWLS, BROOMS, and CLASSES in! As well as the HEADMISTRESS CHALLENGE, DETENTION and QUIDDITCH! Phew!

Good day and welcome to the last Monday of the Term. It has been busy & crazy for me. I'm sure it has been for all of you!

Today I am going to show off a teeny tiny fraction of the Fabulousness of the assignments handed in!

From NaturalKnitty, we have a lovely Arithmancy OWL. Each mitten has its own personality!

The beautiful Frick is modelling the lovely Herbology OWL she completed. Very niiiice!

Lleavid did a gorgeous pair of socks for divination. No she didn't knit the cute dog! Its nice that the pooch was willing to help stage the photo!

Tesseractivate decided to help the muggle police officers with nice German Sheppard! My brother in-law is a cop and he would love this!

DruscillaWormwood made this pretty shawl for herbology! Pretty Pretty PRETTY!

stormmoon created the latest barbie hat craze for Charms! Every Barbie is going to want one this season!

londonaftrdark made this interesting scarf for Astronomy. It is fascinating to figure out and look at the configuration of this!

SHAWLS SHAWLS SHAWLS. Tis the season and I love them! Just stalk my projects and you'll see. needlediva made this awesome shawl for Astronomy.....Add this one to the queue!

chrsintahwest has gotten into the holiday spirit! She finished these WIPS for Care of Magical Creatures. Just in time for the Holidays! How much fun is that?

Felix Felicis Friday

The last Friday of the term! The ending of Fall term is always when my love of the House Cup is particularly intense. As December dawns I go to my magic closet of knit gifts and realize I'm covered. With the exception of the wee mountain trolls I share a home with, I don't have to buy anything. The madness that is 9 months of Slytherin ambition means that I have a peaceful December. Thank you House Cup leadership and professors for all your creativity and prompts that make me NEED to knit all the classes.

To the prizes. Last month's question was as follows:

"Molly Weasley is a well known artisan with the fiber arts. Like many crafty witches she has a yarn stash for everyday needs, sweaters, dishcloths, broom cozies and the like. What is not well known is that she also has a secret stash of luxury fiber yarn that she has charmed to be hidden from view. Afterall, its tough to explain a skein of deep blue alpaca to your sons who are clad in the most itchy of wool. What charms would you use to hide or disguise your own secret luxury yarn?"

And the winner is.....HermioneWeasley who has clearly watched my trolls looking for "missing toys" who answered thus:

"I would charm the luxury yarn to look just like the other itchy wool/non-luxury yarn in my stash, and then I would put it in the same place, right on top. After all, nobody ever finds things that are right in front of them. ;) It would continue to look like the rest of my ordinary yarn while I was knitting with it, but boy, would I be able to tell the difference (I would be able to see what it really looked like, and it would definitely feel so much better!)! "

Can't you just see her apearing to cuddle scritchy regular wool against her cheek with a look of pure bliss on her face? Love it.

Friday with Firsty-a bit late again..

Is it just me or is this term going by fast to you? I have not even posted my homework yet (or even know what I'm doing) and we're half way through this month! What projects are you working on outside of the Harry Potter HPKCHC, or what projects are you doing for it? Currently I'm designing other things, some are small and some are somewhat big (like a cowl) and hopefully the patterns will be released soon (maybe not by the end of this year, but hopefully in early January.)

Talking with some OWL Students

Hi Everyone! Sorry for the delay in looking at some of our OWL students answers to my mini interview. The last two weeks have been crazy, but here we go!
A quick reminder of the questions:
1. What have you learned so far in doing this OWL?
2. How is your progress coming? (Please remember I sent this out the end of October)
3. Any surprises, good or bad, so far?

cmelvin:
1. I really needed to redraft my cable charts to include the wrong side when I was doing the flat knitting. I kept the hem flat so I didn’t have three layers of fabric after the steeking - this was a good idea (the fabric is quite thick enough) but I did a pot of ripping until I got the hang of reversing the twists.
2. Very slowly, I’m afraid. I still have not completed the body of the hoodie, with sleeves, buttonband and hood all still to go. But then, I’m knitting this because I wanted the FO, not because I had any realistic expectation of finishing by December.
3. The tree was easier to knit than I expected. The math at the beginning was hard, and I think the seed stitch panel should be longer, but that’s hindsight. It doesn’t look bad. I also had a nightmare moment when joining the hem - due to integrated increases the top of the hem was 4 stitches longer than the bottom, which I failed to take into account. In future I must read the pattern more carefully or not go off on these strange little diversions. I am rarely improving it.

knittingnearsided:
1. I have learned that if I read slower and follow all the directions, the project will turn out well. I have learned to cable as well as most of the stitches were new to me. I used (de)mentors to help when I got stuck and utube to understand stitches when I didn’t.
2. I am right on track and excited about the fact that I will finish on time!
3. I am surprised I can do it! Cables are easier than I thought they would be. This is a Cruciatus Curse Project, so it is not surprising that many bad things have happened. I forgot a 6 inch section and had to figure out how and when to pick up the stitches and get it in there. I had to cast on/start over 3 times. I had to frog back several times. Crucio Crucio But perseverance will win out!

Aikaterini:
1.I’ve learned that scarves may seem really quick and easy to knock out but… they’re not. At least not for me.
2. I have 1 and a half scarf until my midpoint. :-( I’m still trying though! :-) The first scarf was really quick! 1 week and it was done this one has been going for 2 weeks now and it’s not that quick. I’m hoping that I can finish it between today and tomorrow’s football game. Then start on another one I hope will be quick.
3. How long this one is taking has been a surprise. It’s not a very difficult pattern but it’s taking me forever.

inkslinger1121:
1. I learned that when you want to do an OWL, find a way to wind your skeins first, especially if it is 30 different ones! I don’t have a ball winder or swift, so I sit down and use 3 legs of a lawn chair to act as an immobile swift so I can wind by hand. I swear, it takes about half time time of actually knitting the mini sock!
2. October was much better for me than September. I got a little distracted with classes and quidditch and tried to knit more than I had time for, but I budgeted my time better this month and I think I’ll finish on schedule. 13 mini socks are done and #14 is on its way!
3. Hmmm. With having to wind all this yarn I have had a big knotted mess happen once or twice. Once even necessitated bringing in the big guns (hubby) to help untangle. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much smoother the knitting is now- I mostly have the pattern memorized and I’m eager to try adult sized socks again! (When my OWL is finished of course!)

Dawntreader7:
1. Each of the four main Magical Creatures I’m “hunting” has taught me something different so far. My bundimun (Citron) specimen was all about stamina - seemingly endless row after row - but I learned that that’s the very best kind of project to be working on while watching your favorite show. (Doctor Who, anyone?) The graphorn (Grayhaven) was a little bit difficult because of gauge issues, but I love how it turned out in the end. I’m also nearly done the 3rd creature, the salamander (Tudor). The shaping of that cowl was a brand-new technique for me.
2. I’ve turned in my 50% post! I also nearly finished my salamander, but my OWL has been put on hold just a bit because I got a huge Etsy order. It should be shipped out by this weekend and progress will resume! I am a little nervous about my final creature. I think it will be the biggest challenge because I have to learn how to do a provisional cast on, which has always scared me… I know I’ll figure it out though!
3. I was surprised how quickly I finished the first 2.9 projects. It’s a good thing I did, though, because of all the other non-OWL knitting I’ve had to get done this month. November will be all about my OWL and Order mission (after one class, of course :).

LidiDi:
1) I have learned that colorwork is significantly tighter than regular stockinette. I had frog most of one mitten of “Musica” and buy needles two sizes bigger after I realized that the mitten would never fit. The re-knit went extremely fast though.
I’ve also learned that acrylic needles, double-held acrylic yarn and k3tog’s don’t play nice. The nice thing about Arithmancy is that I could work on another set of mittens while I was waiting for my new needles. I got the replacement needles just as soon as I finished up another mitten.
2) I am currently working on my fifth mitten out of 10, so I’ll be good for 50% by the end of October, though I wanted to be there sooner.
3) See #1 for surprises.

barknknit:
1. I have learned that I can spin more yarn that I originally thought I could. I had not attempted such a big project before but I now know I can at least do it. I’m almost done with all the spinning and then I have to dye, which will be a little difficult because I’ll need a day where my hubby or someone can watch the baby. I also learned I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a yarn meter. That would help with the yardage counts!
2. I have managed to spin and ply up 1226 yards and only have about 274 left to spin singles for and ply up! I’m hoping to go a little over because I fear not having enough for the cardigan. :)
3.I haven’t had any major surprises other than maybe the fact that in the years I’ve been spinning, my spinning has magically begun to be more consistent. I still have some thicker and thinner parts but overall I’m more consistent than I have ever been.

Always wear your helmet…

And other things I’ve learnt about cricket (and knitting!)

Rule 1: Helmets are good!

Have you ever been hit in the head with a cricket ball? Possibly not, but I have and let me tell you, it hurts! So now whenever I’m batting, I’m sure to always use a helmet. I think this applies to knitting too. I mean when you think about it, we should all probably wear hats a lot more. They do so much good for us. Be it protecting you from the sun, or protecting you from the cold, for weddings or for funerals, in the shower or even just wearing around the house…there are few times in life when a hat is inappropriate! And so my first advice to any novice (or not so novice) knitters and crocheter’s out there is MAKE A HAT! It doesn’t have to be fancy, just functional and it’s a great first project which can be worn over and over again! Easy right?!

Rule 2: A good cricket bat makes a big difference (and is great for killing zombies!)

Having a well suited cricket bat really helps you improve your batting and is essential for getting your ball to go further. The same thing can be applied to you knitting needles and crochet hooks. FIND THE RIGHT ONES FOR YOU.

This could mean that you might need to save up a little to buy it, but the rewards are limitless. Finding the metal or plastic hard on your hands? Have you considered bamboo? Can’t get the right grip on your hook? Why not try adding a pencil grip to the hook for extra comfort. Speaking as someone on the ultimate budget (for the curious it’s more commonly known as ‘being a student’) I find that little and lots often is better than large amounts. I often find that if I can save up just £1 a week, I can either afford to get that nice crochet hook I’ve been wanting, or a pretty skein of yarn at the end of the month!

Rule 3: Wear the correct kit!

Unsurprisingly to many, cricket kit isn’t the most glamorous of sporting attire. (I mean really white trousers?) But I have found that SMALL CHANGES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. For example, wearing a sports bra, as well as wearing some shorts underneath the trousers really makes a difference…now the only people who know that my underwear might be blue is the people I tell, they can’t actually see it.

Knitting and crochet is similar in that respect. If the pattern is calling for you to knit with 4mm needles and dk weight wool to achieve a gauge of 5x5 stitches per inch (ok not true to life but stick with me!) and you find your only achieving 4x5 then it’s ok to change the needle size…or the wool for that matter. Everybody has different tension, be it in knitting or in crochet and more often than not the patterns (particularly if they are written by big brand companies) will have been worked out using maths, rather than actually have test knitters and taking averages (I know, crazy right?) So sometimes it might mean a slight change in wool or needle, but trust me it’s worth it!

Rule 4: Get your runs in!

In cricket you have two batters, one at either end of the field, each time one of them hits the ball they get runs which equal more points…with me so far? ‘But how does this relate to knitting?’ I hear you ask. Ah well, this is the clever bit! If the batters happen to not make it to the other end, he’s out. That’s it. Do not pass go. Do not collect £200 etc etc.

Ok, it’s a stretch, I know. But CRICKET RUNS ARE A LOT LIKE LIFELINES IN KNITTING, YOU NEED THEM TO SUCCEED! When lace knitting for the first time particularly with something that requires concentration, I cannot emphasise enough how useful lifelines are! Don’t know what a lifeline is? Well this fantastic video explains it! (of course there are many others out there too!) Lifelines will ensure you always ‘get your runs in’ so to speak, you can’t get bowled, run or caught out. If you make a mistake, you can always fix it, go back to where you were and still be good!

Rule 5: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Mission Report:

The owls are beginning to bring in long rolls of parchment. I am stunned at some of what I've been reading; our operatives are brave, to say the least.

A few of our operatives have been quite detailed in their reports. Perhaps if you read them you will be inspired as you work towards finishing your mission. Only aliases will be used here, although real names are listed in the reports.

Rubyyarn, who is working in diagonally, has provided a detailed saga of her time spent on her mission.

Abycat has also provided us with a few detailed accounts of her endeavors.

We've also been privy to quite the story from ElizabethsMommy.

Finally, FlyKitten has told us her tale.

I know there are others who have provided wonderful narratives of their mission progress, but I am exhausted from the preparations for the imminent owl inundation. Just a few more days until completed mission reports will be flying into headquarters -- literally!

Welcome to another edition of the Cooking Cauldron.

Today's guests are the infamous Malfoy family & their army of house elves who actually do the cooking. I don't think one of these people cook. EVER! I suppose trying to lead the death eaters and help the dark lord makes one way to busy to cook. Thank Goodness for the House elves!

This is a Family that likes to make a statement. They want you to know that they are superior in every way. To show this, they eat only the most expensive of meals. Currently the family is on a Kobe Beef kick. After all they are quite pale & need to keep their iron up!

So I present to you a recipe for Kobe(Wagyu) Beef!

Wagyu Beef Steak Diane

Yield 1 Portion

Ingredients

    * 8 oz. Filet
    * 4 oz. Shiitake mushrooms
    * 2 oz. Finely chopped shallots
    * 2 oz. Demi glaze
    * 1 oz. Heavy cream
    * 1 oz. Finely chopped scallions
    * 1 oz. Brandy
    * 1 oz. Cabernet wine
    * 1 Tbsp. Unsalted butter
    * Salt and pepper
    * 1/2 oz. Olive oil blend
Method

   1. Season beef with salt and pepper.
   2. In a hot sauté pan add oil, blend, sear one side of the beef, then flip and sear the other side. Remove beef from pan and reserve on plate.
   3. In same pan, sauté mushrooms and shallots, deglaze with brandy and red wine, then add cream.
   4. Return beef to sauce. Garnish with scallions.

Only the best will do!

Hm.. settles down in a comfy chair to look over assignments for this month's courses at Hogwarts, and to see what's expected...

Well it's that time of month with the new classes posted! It seems to me as a Slytherin to go for Care of Magical Creatures or Potions. I have to see and look back at my Raverly notebook at which classes I had submitted my homework to, and do a huge review post at the end of this term. I can't believe it's already November in the Fall term! And yes I did say I'm hoping to do the assignment for...

Care of Magical Creatures!

Option 1: Craft something in fiery colors.

I'm planning on doing Option 1's homework. At Stitches East I picked up some yarn that reminded me of Gryffindor. Okay, so at Stitches East this yarn was screaming at me-and I had to pick it up (haha). I'm actually planning on doing socks out of them, and the yarn is (striping) a bright yellow, red, and black. It reminds me of Gryffindor, fire colors, and the Chinese Dragon (Chinese Dragon for some reason, I have NO idea how I came up with that haha). Any who I rarely do any socks, but I hope to get sock knitting squeezed in as well.

Catching Up with Our NEWT-lings

Evening everyone! I sent out questions two weeks ago to all those I've been following for OWLs and NEWTs. I had planned on giving the NEWT update last week and the OWL this week, but my eyes were not cooperating last week (stupid allergies). So instead this week I'll be featuring our NEWT students answers and next week we'll look at the OWL students. Then hopefully finish up the last two weeks of term with turn-ins! So let's get started!
I asked each student the following three questions:
1. What have you learned so far in doing this NEWT?
2. How is your progress coming?
3. Any surprises, good or bad, so far?
And here are the answers I got:
Volkat:
1. I have learned that you can never underestimate the power of quidditch, or the desire to Knit All The Things. I knew my October was going to be crazy busy, and had planned to have more than the required 50% complete by the end of September. However I was distracted by too many shiny things, and this didn’t happen. NEWTs really require you to focus.

2. Progress-wise, I’m behind! And I don’t think I have any hope of meeting my 75% by the 31st. I still think I can finish by the end of term; there’s just too much RL going on this week to fit in much knitting.

3. Surprises. Hm. Well, my first cat sock is too small, so I’m saving that project for last along with the needed maths. I’ll need to reknit the first one in an attempt to have a functional matching pair. That was the only big unexpected thing to come up. I’m trying to do the mitts two-at-a-time (I’ve not tried this before) to make up time…which really doesn’t make sense, but it’s the way I feel about it. If that goes well, I may attempt the sock rematch that way in November.

Stitchywitchy:
1. What have I learned so far? Do a m1 even if it say kfb. I’ve got “holes” where I kfb in the body shaping (which I’ve never done before) and they bother me. I’m going to go back when I’m done and see if I can tack them shut.

2. Progress is on track! I should be able to make my 75% this month! woohoo!! I’ve got piece #3 done for the HoM portion, and my sweater is nearing it’s 75% mark, too!

3. Surprises….just the fact that I LOVE this sweater more than I thought I would! I found my KP ends and new 60” cable, so I am actually able to try it on, and it fits!!!

djmeurer:
1. Expect that in a 4 month time period real life will come up. Time turners are useful for getting everything accomplished. Misplacing your pattern greatly hinders progress.
As far as techniques go this has been a NEWT of firsts. I knit my 1st fair isle sweater and steeked it. I spun with superwash wool and nylon for the 1st time. I spun my 1st cabled yarn

2. The 1st 2 months were great, I got to 50% about a week early and was very happy with how things were turning out. Then I had some real life things hit: both positive and negative, some expected some surprises. I know fully expect that I can hit the 75% mark on time by finishing all of my spinning. However, I don’t know if the last sweater is going to happen or not.

3. I was really shocked how the yarn I spun for Luna came out. I had dyed the fiber with very bright colors and some white spaces and was very surprised at how much those blended into pailer colors. Holding the first skein of yarn up to the remaining fiber, it was almost hard to believe they were from the same hank. I am now knitting socks from that yarn for my BROOM and am finding that it knits up in a way that looks like Luna to me. So I think that this was happy surprise.

Cindiknits:
1. I’ve learned a lot! I’m using a new-to-me charting program to chart the socks and fingerless gloves I’m designing for one part of my NEWT (how sad is it that I can’t remember if it’s Ancient Runes or Astronomy. Divination?), so I’m learning that as I go. I’ve also discovered that I love designing patterns! These first 2 are just socks and gloves, but I’ve got lots of ideas for other things swimming around in my head. I’m designing 2 patterns for my Order of the Phoenix mission, too, and hope to have all 4 done by the end of term. Then I plan to stalk the Ravelry pattern pages obsessively to see if anyone wants to knit them, or at least put them in their queue.

2. I’m pretty much right on schedule. Both patterns have been test-knit by my awesome friend Amy and I just need to incorporate her feedback and they’ll be ready to publish. They’ll be free Ravelry downloads, and I really hope people like them :-). I’m also cruising along on the Charms portion of my NEWT, which is a Shetland lace shawl. It’s the only thing on my knitting to-do list today, so I should get a whack of rows done today. My Order of the Phoenix mission is calling to me, though, so I may have to switch between projects. I have a hard time knitting one thing for long stretches of time.

3. I’m surprised at how easy it is to make mistakes when designing. What seems obvious and straightforward in my head doesn’t always turn out that way once I try to get it written up. And I’ve been happily surprised at how interactive the design process can be. Getting feedback from friends, having people I like test knit my ideas, etc. is so much fun!

Jajigirl:
1. I’m learning that although I love knitting lace charting it so it comes out exactly how my brain sees it is not as easy. The lace panel in my knee sock gave me fits and will need adjustments before publication. The lace for my first hat was much simpler and will not need modification for publication.

2. I am not as far along as I want to be right now. I’d say I’m at the 60% mark. I need to be at 75% by the end of the month. I’ve been very distracted knitting socks this month. They are great socks, just not part of my NEWT. I’d say they are a field trip into the wilds of knitting instead of staying in my dorm to study.

3. My biggest surprise is I’m needing far less yarn than I imagined I would to complete my projects. This is both good and bad. Good because it is always GREAT to have more yarn. Bad because that means I’ve over estimated my yardage for my benchmarks and I’m needing to knit more…knit faster…knit more…knit faster…

GazeboGal:
1. That I’m still not fond of colorwork, no matter how much I like the result.
Also, that over enough repetitions of the geometric patterns of traditional Fair Isle, I can memorize it and not have to stare at the pattern the whole time.

2. Thank goodness I have weekly goals. I may be behind on them, but not too far. I made my September 50% goal, and I’m pushing very hard to reach that October 75%. Also, I’m very pleased that I named my benchmarks in terms of “grams of yarn” instead of locking myself in to a particular sequence. Things have happened that I couldn’t have predicted, and the flexibility is what’s kept me on track.

3. I hadn’t worked with sport weight yarn much at all before - I hadn’t realized how close it is to fingering. I wish that I had been brave enough to re-calculate and get this as worsted yarn and simply have larger, fewer motifs. A nearly-fingering weight sweater? This is… difficult.

Not a surprise, so much, but… I get very excited about making progress because of the support and cheers from House Cuppers. I know that I can post a progress picture and get words of encouragement, and that helps me a lot.

Mauri:
1. Technique-wise, I’ve learned how to apply i-cord to a non-edge portion of a knitted item, along with making sure there are no terrible holes between my glove fingers. I’ve also learned that a good designer can make a difficult pattern a joy to knit…and vice versa. I’ve learned to live with a mistake in my knitting, because 1) nobody else can see it and 2) I’ll cry if I have to rip those frakking socks back again.
Also, planning is great, but it’s hard to know what you’ll want to knit two months in the future.

2. I think I’m progressing well. I’m on track for 75% by the end of October at least, though I want to get a little ahead because November is looking to be busy. Luckily, the socks I’m working on now are going faster than expected, so maybe I’ll have a chance to pull ahead. So far I’ve completed two pairs of socks, a pair of gloves, a cowl, a cowl, and some slippers. Except for the slippers, they’re all from fingering weight. Not doing that again, I’m craving bulky yarn.

3. Designers will sometimes give you a free pattern if you find a mistake in their design? Finding those mistakes was a surprise - I thought I was losing my mind and had to go through the direction with a handful of raisins (a raisin per stitch) several times before I convinced myself that there was a mistake.

jedimag16:
1. That I am a worse procrastinator than I first thought! I had a lot of other projects going on in August, so I wasn’t able to focus on my NEWT as much as I wanted to and it really set me behind. I’ve also learned that when you are doing a lot of crocheting with black yarn you need a really really good source of light. I just invested in an OTT Lite for our living room, and I think it might just save my NEWT. This NEWT (plus the past few failed OWLs) have also reinforced that sometimes I’m way too ambitious for my own good.

2. Slowly. I’m probably right at about 40% now, so I have a long way to go to catch up. Two dragons (out of 7) are completely done, with 3 others in progress. If I’m lucky I’ll still make my 75% and 100% marks, but it’s not a sure thing just yet.

3. Not really - but I still have a long way to go so there still might be surprises down the road.

Mission Report:

I am beginning to worry about some of the missions that are currently underway. Some operatives are sending in reports on their ongoing missions, yet many have remained silent. I suspect it is because they are deep into their mission and do not want to risk a compromise. I can only assume that no news is good news and await the owls expected to be arriving in the next few weeks.

Those that are reporting are very near completion. I would like to encourage you in your endeavors for the Order by sharing some of the documents they have submitted. Many have been sneaky, using Muggle-type photographs to conceal their missions. I will be using the operatives code names (Rav names) so as to keep their cover safe should this be intercepted.

Friday with Firsty here! Sorry, no "Friday with Firsty" graphic haha... but I just wanted to wish everyone a great Happy Halloween! I actually just finished a project-the Dancing Batty Shawl-a great, and fast Halloween knit! A lot of podcasters are doing Halloween socks, but I just can't knit socks-even trying a new method-maybe it's the yarn? (Not sure..) I'm just not enthused by any socks, not even Socktoberfest helped me a bit, which was frustrating-but oh well. I think I had already posted about the Dancing Batty Shawl, but if not-the photo is above!

Is your 50% OWL in? Are you freaking out about the instability of your BROOM? Well push those project bags aside and party with Professor Slughorn for a bit because it is Felix Felicis Friday. For those of you new to this game, the last Friday of each month a completely bizzare question wakes me from a deep sleep. I post it here and you have until the last Thursday of the next month to answer in the comments.
Last month I posed the following question:

We are starting to see some missions near finishing. It is exciting to know of all the work out there done on behalf of the Order. The owls are beginning to trickle in with even more updates on missions.

This week I found myself in a room with commander alexist. My interview went as follows:

It's often been heard that during the first wizarding war, Dumbledore created a way for Order members to speak to each other via talking patronuses... patroni? Moving on - what form does your patronus take?
My patronus takes the form of an arctic wolf.

What's your non-order day job?

During Quidditch season you can often find me out on the Pitch with my teammates, The Waiting Werewolves! I've also been known to do a bit of Curse Breaking, sometimes even on purpose. Never could resist getting myself into a tight spot. ;)

Wait, you mean right now? Oh, a little of this, a little of that. Hey look! Is that a Cornish Pixie over there?

What's your hidden talent?

Well if I told you my hidden talents, they wouldn't stay hidden, now would they?

But um... Did you realize I arrived at this interview an hour ago? No, you didn't notice? Fantastic! Sorry, didn't mean to make you jumpy -- gotta keep the skills sharp.

Here, have a sip of this to calm you down. It's a really perky batch of Chocolate Mint Wolfs' Ba- Yeah, that's gonna freak you out even more, isn't it? OK, next question!

What made you want to take a lead role in the Order?

Remus Lupin was a special mentor of mine. Where he leads it's impossible not to follow! And that's the thing with The Order -- you can muster all your desire to fight the good fight, but until someone shows you the way inside...

They needed someone with a strong arm that no one would see coming. And I started to see some things about myself that others would call a curse could actually be my greatest assets.

What was your first mission you undertook for the Order?

Oh gosh, I started way back when, doing a little reconnaissance. I still do a lot of that today! I can't disclose any specifics, but Quidditch and Curse Breaking both provide excellent cover for traveling around at a moment's notice.

And if one of my traveling trunks happens to thunk and shake, everyone assumes it's a bludger.

Anything else you want to add?

I have to say, the enthusiasm of The Order's new recruits has been really inspiring! Dark Magic won't know what hit it!

Two exciting news, one-Stitches East 2011 for the New England area (I'm assuming it's for New England-not sure how Stitches works..) is tomorrow and I'm excited! Not only that-I worked hard to finish the shawl above, the Dancing Batty Shawl. I loved the pattern, I love shawls, and I love lace! Sorry it's not a very good picture (in a rush..) I have learned that I am a very, very slow cable-er and that I really should mark my place in charts.
2. How is your progress coming?
It's stalled a bit because I had too much going on the beginning of this month and couldn't work on it much, and then when I tried to pick it back up this past weekend I couldn't figure out where I left off in the chart. Although for a little while I thought I had it, only to realize 3 rows later that I wasn't in the right place and had to rip back. I haven't had the heart to pick it back up. 50% will not be happening on time so I'm losing hope I will get it completed.
3. Any surprises, good or bad, so far?
I'm loving how it's turning out so I'm going to finish it no matter what. I am surprised that I couldn't remember where I left off, and that I can't figure out where I am supposed to be!

Mission Report:

I am continually amazed by our operatives. Many are finding success, some are coming against obstacles but are pressing forward in an effort to further the Order's cause.

This week I found myself able to speak with commander Mushroom. My interview went as follows:

My patronus takes the form of a Mustang.

What's your non-order day job?

I work part time in the Ministry in the Regulation for Magical Transportation Department. I give apparition tests and fill out loads of paperwork. The rest of my time is spent working on my family farm. We have a large forest where we cultivate and harvest a large variety of mushrooms for magical and culinary uses. The culinary mushrooms are mostly a front for the Muggles though they are bought by witches and wizards as well.

What's your hidden talent?
Generations back my grandmother was a Silkie. Other than that I'm a plain old witch.

What made you want to take a lead role in the Order?

"Since my family has lived on our large estate for many generations they have been relatively isolated from the politics and ""hubub"" (as they call it) of the wizarding world. They were neither for nor against you-know-who during the wars. Out of sight, out of mind as it were. In many ways they were like the conscientious objectors in the Muggle world. They were happy to just be farmers.

I on the other hand, wanted to make a difference. I really enjoy teaching and even taught Herbology for a term at Hogwarts. I thought I could help out most as part of the Order and when I found out that we were teaming up with students at Hogwarts I jumped at the chance. "

What was your first mission you undertook for the Order?
My family doesn't have a shop in Diagon Alley but we are suppliers for many of the potions shops. Many of the shopkeepers have known me since I was a child so I have a deep connection with them. Even some of the more shady stores are friendly to me and my family. Though it wasn't official, I think of my first mission as gaining all of those contacts and laying my web of informants. Unoffically, I've been in recruitment for a very long time.

Welcome to another edition of the Cooking Cauldron.

In honour of the Tri-wizard tournament we are lucky to have with us former potential champion, Fleur Delacourt-Weasly.

"I luv ze fransh kizine!" She says. " Zer iz a muggle chef oo makes ze best Bouillabaisse!"

So in honour of that, I present to you

Julia Child's recipe for Bouillabaisse!
Bouillabaisse a la Marseillaise
(Mediterranean Fish Chowder)
For 6 to 8 people

The Soup Base

1 cup sliced yellow onions
¾ to 1 cup sliced leeks, white part only; or ½ cup more onions
½ cup of olive oil
A heavy 8-quart kettle or casserole
2 to 3 cups chopped fresh tomatoes, or 1¼ cups drained canned tomatoes, or ¼ cup tomato paste
4 cloves mashed garlic

Cook the onions and leeks slowly in the olive oil for 5 minutes without browning.

Stir in the tomatoes and garlic, and cook 5 minutes more.

2½ quarts water
6 parsley sprigs
1 bay leaf
½ tsp thyme or basil
1/8 tsp fennel
2 big pinches of saffron
A 2-inch piece or ½ tsp dried orange peel
1/8 tsp pepper
1 Tb salt (none if using clam juice)
3 to 4 lbs. fish heads, bones, and trimmings including shellfish remains; or, 1 quart clam juice and 1½ quarts of water, and no salt

Add the water, herbs, seasoning, and fish or clam juice to the kettle. Bring to boil, skim, and cook, uncovered, at the slow boil for 30 to 40 minutes. Strain, correct seasoning. Set aside, uncovered, until cool if you are not finishing the bouillabaisse immediately, then refrigerate.

Cooking the Bouillabaisse

The soup base
6 to 8 lbs. assorted lean fish, and shellfish if you wish, selected and according to directions at beginning of recipe

Bring the soup base to a rapid boil in the kettle about 20 minutes before serving. Add lobsters, crabs, and firm-fleshed fish. Bring quickly back to the boil and boil rapidly, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Then add the tender-fleshed fish, and the clams, mussels, and scallops. Bring back to the boil again for 5 minutes. Do not overcook.

Serving

A hot platter
A soup tureen or soup casserole
Rounds of toasted French bread
1/3 cup roughly chopped fresh parsley

Immediately lift out the fish and arrange on the platter. Carefully taste soup for seasoning, place 6 to 8 slices of bread in the tureen, and pour in the soup. Spoon a ladleful of soup over the fish, and sprinkle parsley over both fish and soup. Serve immediately.

At the table, each guest is served or helps himself to both fish and soup, placing them in a large soup plate. Eat the bouillabaisse with a large soup spoon and fork, helped along with additional pieces of French bread. If you wish to serve wine, you have a choice of rosé, a strong dry white wine such as Côtes du Rhône or Riesling, or a light, young red such as Beaujolais or domestic Mountain Red.

Happy Friday everyone! I don't want another Friday to slip by-it's been an forgetful week for me (and a busy one). I had turned in my homework for October 2011-Defense Against the Dark Arts a few weeks ago, and got approval! The Cowl above is actually a very easy (and quick) cowl, and one of my favorite cowls. This is actually a Christmas gift for someone. I love the cowl pattern so much, I made two! I'm thinking about making it again as another Christmas gift (we'll see.) But this is a great pattern-and a mindless, just a 2x2 rib. It's the Aplca Hug Cowl. Oh by the way-it's free!

Sorry it's a quickie this time, but I've been meaning to be blogging about the DADA homework for this month!

Mission Report:

I am still happily fulfilling my role as owl receiver at headquarters. It seems as though the newly approved members of the Order are quite busy on their missions as I have seen several updates come through the owlery here. Rubyyarn has been keeping us updated in her suspenseful story, should you like to hear what's going on in a particular mission.

Besides the few owls that have ventured from active Order members with mission updates, not much has been occurring here at headquarters. Fortunately, I was able to speak with another of the commanders this week. My interview went as follows:

I can't reveal too much about my day job. It involves copious amounts of paperwork, cheese and goats. Ministry head hunters have been after me for years. I keep telling them that ""I'm not the auror you are looking for."" The never get the muggle reference. One of these days I'm going to take a sabbatical and travel the world looking for other wizarding communities."

What's your hidden talent?
My hidden talent, hmmm. Ah yes, I know one of them I can share that won't get me in too much trouble with my supervisors. I was charmed at birth to have "sneaky feet". I can come and go with relative ease. Most often I am not noticed. It's a very handy ability to have while working for the Order, as you can imagine. I've heard the sneaky feet charm is very hard to master. There are fewer and fewer professors who know how to cast it, so people with sneaky feet are becoming very rare. I hope to learn the spell one day.

What made you want to take a lead role in the Order?
I know this guy named Steve. Even among witches and wizards he's considered somewhat half baked. Well, back in 2009, I believe it was June, he told me about this fantastic group. I sighed and let him continue. It turns out Steve crackpot behavior is to throw others off his trail. He took me to a meeting and the rest is history. Plus do-gooding and all the free scones I can eat doesn't hurt either.

What was your first mission you undertook for the Order?
My first mission was a small one, but I was able to gain very valuable information on Lu... Wait, wait, wait, I've said too much already.

Anything else you want to add?
I have been thrilled with the number and variety of missions all the operatives have come up with. I will continue to make myself available to anyone. I expect we will see great things in November.

Friday with Firsty: First Socktoberfest 2011!

So in honor of Socktoberfest 2011, here is a little entry for it! I've only been knitting for a year, and started in May 2010. I didn't get into socks until after awhile. I think those socks above-the Juliet socks are just tubed socks (k3, p1 all the way to the toe). I forget which yarn I used. Then I started to knit socks non-stop until I got burned out on them (haven't picked up ever since the burn-out until now.) Currently I'm working on this Socktober goals-at least just ONE pair of socks for me-Halloween Cabled Socks!

My Socktober goals:
1.) Finish my Halloween Cabled socks (they're only just orange, and with tiny cables.)
2.) Learn to Magic Loop (hoping this would really bring the magic back into knitting socks!)

What are your plans for Socktoberfest, are you turning in any socks for the House Cup?

More 50% Progress!

Good Evening Everyone! Are you ready to see some more 50% progress made on OWLs and NEWTs? I know I am so let's get right to it!

Knittingnearsided has turned in her 50% on her DADA OWL jumper!

It's looking great to me!

Jajigirl got to 50% on her NEWT last week, and can I just say: WOW! I am so impressed with what she's created, my favorite thing is the Hermione Cowl, which I'm hoping I will get to test knit for her! The pattern looks lovely, and since I have the same yarn I can't wait to see how mine will turn out!

Volkat also got to 50% on her NEWT and it also is looking amazing! I can't tell you how much fun it is to get to look through all these great projects!

I'm uber impressed by everything, but I'm partial to the shawl since it's in some of my favorite colors!

While stitchywitchy was a day short on getting her 50% in, I still am loving the cables on her hat:

Mission Report:

Since the signal has been given, I've found the various commanders of the Order to be a bit... restless. As such, I've been able to get some time with them and have asked them a few questions. I think you will find their answers most enlightening.

I was only able to get in touch with commander DrusillaWormwood this week. I hope to speak with all of the commanders in turn.

I work at the family business, Slug and Jiggers Apothecary in Diagon Alley. I am a Potions Master and Herbologist, especially skilled in poisons and antidotes. I do some contract work for the Ministry from time to time, and I put in some volunteer hours every month at St. Mungos Hospital for Magical Maladies.

What's your hidden talent?
I invented the spell that conjures tequila.

What made you want to take a lead role in the Order?
Even though my pure blood heritage and family history of Slytherin seem somehow opposed to the Order ideals, we are not a family of dark witches and wizards. We have always supported the goals and ideals which the Order represent, and in the great effort against He-who-must-not-be-named, my family allowed the Order use of our facilities when needed and passed intel to the Order whenever possible. Although I am the first in the family to formally join the Order, I'm hardly the first to be involved in helping them.

What was your first mission you undertook for the Order?
My first official Mission was actually very mundane, but put my expertise to good use. I was asked to test various potions ingredients and check them for purity and adulterations. There had been several attempts on the part of the Death Eaters to pass poisons and cursed substances into circulation and into the stores at Hogwarts through various sources, so I spent many months moving between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, testing potions ingredients for many hours. Not exactly exciting and glamorous, but my work insured the safety of our supply stores.

Anything else you want to add?
Not at this time.

1 container of Asiago Cheese grated - MMM I love asiago!
1 container of premade Bruschetta topping - Again yummy!
Half a bag of pasta, Kingsley prefers shells or fusili

Boil the pasta, add all the ingredients together and eat either hot or cold!

Kinglsey is a single man with relatively simple tastes.
This is great for company, as they think you've gone out of your way to make something extravagant.

Friday with Firsty: First month of HP classes Over!

Friday almost slipped up under me this week to explain why the post is later in the day! Yes, I'm trying something new, to put a little creative spark into the blog post. September is mostly over, and October begins tomorrow! I already blogged about how I love Fall and October, and fall knitting one Friday. I might change a few things about the graphic, but that's a start so far (okay I forgotten to put HPKCHC! opps!)

Anywho, being the first month of classes are over (already, it's gone so quick!) here's my thoughts of expression of how it went...

MY POTIONS CLASS: I did a cute purple baby hat for potions, since it fit into both options: destashing, and decreasing! This year I've been mostly doing stashbusting (or well been desiring too..)

MY ASTRONOMY OWL: It's coming very well! I think I made it to the 50% mark? That didn't happen last time, and I'm quite pleased with the progress on it.. and hopes to get it done in the next two months.

Helpful Tips for First Years/NQFY's: Don't be intimated by the OWLS, go ahead and try them! They're fun, even in long term. You can defiantly have more experience with the more coming up with proposals.

Felix Felicis Friday

Welcome to almost October and the first Felix Felicis Friday of Fall Term 2011. I hope you've enjoyed the blog this month as our staff it truly outstanding this term. Now we pause to celebrate a month almost done and look up from those last minute projects or that wild dance party in the great hall.

The Felix Felicis question for September was thus; "Madame Malkin has retained you to design a fall line of mittens for witches and wizards of distinction. Describe your first pair and what charms would be on them that would help the owner?"

We got an amazing 18 answers ranging from mittens that would change to whatever you wanted them to be, warming charms, and those covered with intarsia wand waving sequences.

The winner this month is Gryffindor first year Knittingnearsided who said, "Being a witch/wizard distinction for all of my life, I believe my mitten would be black interlaced with gold threads of memories. These memories would be of my mother and when I put my hands in the water, I would be able to look in and see my mom and whatever memories that I had chosen to put in my special distinctive mittens. When I removed my hands from the water, my mittens would become dry and if it was cold out, the mittens would heat up and give me a warm feeling all over to match the memories I experienced. "

Pensive mittens! Maybe if Professor Snape had had some of these his demeanour would have been less sour. Congratulations Knititngnearsided, pm me your address in Ravelry and a prize will wing its way to your door.

Mission Report:

It was my hope to get interviews with the commanders this week. While they are here at headquarters, they are much too busy receiving and reviewing BROOMs to be able to talk to a probie like me. They work feverishly night and day in attempt to get all BROOMs reviewed before the October 1st signal is given.

As a substitute, I've utilized my duty as owl receiver to sneak a peek at a few more BROOMs. These BROOMs are special as they include self-designed elements. There are four that I've come across so far, but I only have enough time away from my duties to report on two of them at this time. Perhaps I'll be able to get enough time away from the owls to report on the other two next week.

My name is Tristan Gamp and I am contacting you today to volunteer my services and skills for the Undercover Operations section of the Order of the Phoenix. I believe I would be most adequately placed to work Bill Weasley at Gringotts. Please see below for a sample of my work.

Even while still at Hogwarts I was already interested in the various aids available to witches and wizard with regards to stealth and invisibility. Not everyone can afford a costly Invisibility Cloak after all! I have travelled extensively to discover a broad variety of plant and animal products to use in stealth wear.
But enough of my research - which I am sure we will have more than enough time to discuss in more detail at a later date.

I have found a basic lace pattern that I will adept for a lovely rectangular shawl as well as a yarn that is elegant in its simplicity yet sophisticated with its unobtrusive silver highlights. I am sure the Goblins will admire both the craftsmanship and the material. What’s more, the yarn was died with a blend including Peruvian Instant Darkness powder and the shawl can thus be used for undercover mission as it will allow the wearer to not attract attention.

Ariadne Drake enters the Hog’s Head, laden with a paper sack from Honeydukes as well as bags from Scrivenshaft’s and Dervish & Banges. She orders a drink, and settles with her (slightly grungy) mug in a shadowy corner. She leaves some twenty minutes later, leaving a small tip on the bar.

Aberforth scoops up the handful of change, his sharp eyes picking out the silver denarius among the sickles. He flips it casually in his hand, noting it was minted in the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus. He drops it into a smoked-glass pitcher under the bar; the ringing sound is heard far away in the kitchen of Grimmaud Place, notifying the Mission Chiefs that a Broom has been delivered to the hollow leg of a shabby cane chair in a Hogsmeade pub. Soon, a magical summoning draws the scrap of parchment to Order Headquarters, and the hollow leg stands, once again, empty.

Dear Mission Chief,

I, Ariadne Drake, wish to use a family contact to infiltrate the Deatheaters’ organization. In order to carry out this perilous mission, I will design and craft winter accessories (Hat or hats, mitts and/or scarf, totalling not less than 400 yards of knitting, plus at least one pattern ready for test knitting) that will blend seamlessly into the Muggle world, but that will, to those in the know, proclaim my identity as a witch.

Though I have improvised patterns in the past, I have no experience writing them down, and will thus be developing a new skill. I also intend to conceal a spare wand (a good idea for anyone who intends to infiltrate the Deatheaters) amongst cables in at least one of the items, and my cabling experience is minimal. I expect to spend a week, or perhaps two, swatching; and a further two weeks creating the first item. I anticipate a week of pattern-writing, then an additional two to four weeks applying the design motif to other items (with notes, but probably not true patterns) or creating further designs.

I can only hope that the Deatheaters will not perceive the duality of my designs.

It's that day again all!
It was a busy weekend with a flurry of excitement. First task ended and they came the laid back, getting to know you of the yule ball.
For starters I wanted to highlight a couple of the tournament pieces handed in!
First we have Slytherin BlindSquirrel with a lovely Air task!

Boy does that look toasty!I am jealous that I don't have something that warm for the upcoming winter season!
